Asphalt Calculator
The tool estimates compacted geometric volume and converts it to mix weight. Verify lift design, density, binder percentage, and order units with the mix producer.
How to use this calculator
Enter pavement dimensions and compacted thickness.
Confirm the plant mix density and binder percentage.
Review the 5% default allowance and order in the supplier’s weight unit.
Formula
Order volume = area × compacted thickness × (1 + allowance). Mix weight = volume × density. Binder mass = mix weight × binder percentage.
Worked example
A 1,000 ft² area at 3 in compacted thickness is 250 ft³. At 145.2 lb/ft³ it is 36,300 lb before allowance.
Assumptions and limits
- Default density is 145.2 lb/ft³ and is editable.
- Default extra material is 5%; default binder is 6%.
- This is not a pavement structural-design tool.

Frequently asked questions
Is the entered asphalt thickness loose or compacted?
Enter the finished compacted thickness. Loose-lift thickness and compaction factors should come from the project specification or producer.
Can I use metric and US customary units in the Asphalt Calculator?
Yes. Unit changes convert the same canonical measurement; they do not reinterpret or round your original value.
When does the calculator round?
The calculation keeps full precision internally and rounds only the displayed result. Whole packages are rounded up at the final step.
