Roof Square Footage Calculator
Start with either an already measured horizontal projected roof area or a rectangular building length and width with gable-end and eave overhangs. The calculator applies one rise-per-12 pitch and keeps geometric roof area separate from the extra-material allowance.
How to use the Roof Square Footage Calculator
Enter measurement method; either horizontal projected roof area or building length, width, gable overhang per end, and eave overhang per side; plus rise per 12 and extra-material percentage.
Review whether dimensions are plan or slope measurements, overhangs, hips, valleys, dormers, penetrations, complexity, and supplier bundle coverage.
Read horizontal projected roof area, slope factor, sloped roof area, area including extra material, and roofing squares.
Formula
Footprint mode uses projected area = (building length + 2 × gable overhang) × (building width + 2 × eave overhang). Slope factor = √(1 + (rise/12)²); sloped area = projected area × slope factor. Order area = sloped area × (1 + extra-material rate), and roofing squares = order ft² ÷ 100.
Example
A 1,000 ft² projected roof at 6:12 pitch has factor √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = 1.118, giving about 1,118 ft² before waste.
Assumptions and limitations
- This geometric estimate is not a structural or code check; roof access is hazardous, and valleys, hips, pattern alignment, and flashing require separate review.
- Roof Square Footage Calculator treats the entered values as estimates and does not infer missing project, account, or personal details.
- Calculations retain working precision except where the cited method requires an intermediate rounding step; displayed values are then formatted separately. Source rules and dated rates must be rechecked when they change.

How does the Roof Square Footage Calculator work?
Footprint mode uses projected area = (building length + 2 × gable overhang) × (building width + 2 × eave overhang). Slope factor = √(1 + (rise/12)²); sloped area = projected area × slope factor. Order area = sloped area × (1 + extra-material rate), and roofing squares = order ft² ÷ 100.
What information should I enter in the Roof Square Footage Calculator?
Enter measurement method; either horizontal projected roof area or building length, width, gable overhang per end, and eave overhang per side; plus rise per 12 and extra-material percentage, then verify whether dimensions are plan or slope measurements, overhangs, hips, valleys, dormers, penetrations, complexity, and supplier bundle coverage.
What should I verify before using this Roof Square Footage Calculator result?
This geometric estimate is not a structural or code check; roof access is hazardous, and valleys, hips, pattern alignment, and flashing require separate review.
