Abiotic Factor Battery Calculator
Will your crafting bench or refrigerator stay powered through the night? Compare the estimated runtime of your current battery chain with your chosen outage, then see how many batteries the model needs. This independent fan tool uses documented battery rules reviewed on September 18, 2026; it has not been tested against a specific installed game build.
How to use this calculator
Enter your battery count and select one battery type for a single end-to-end chain. Start with all batteries fully charged; connect every appliance after the final battery.
Count the powered appliances, excluding Plug Strips and Plug Boards. Enter the outage in real minutes; the standard night is 4.5 minutes. Adjust this directly for your world settings.
Compare estimated chain runtime with the outage and review additional batteries needed for your chosen buffer. Ten percent is our adjustable planning choice, not an official game rule. Verify the result during an actual night.
Formula
For N fully charged batteries of capacity C and D devices after the last battery, runtime in real seconds is 5 × C × [1/D + 1/(D+1) + … + 1/(D+N−1)]. Each upstream battery also powers the batteries below it. The minimum chain is the first whole N whose runtime reaches outage seconds × (1 + extra planning time / 100).
Worked example
A full Makeshift battery has 50 charge. With one appliance, its modelled runtime is 5 × 50 = 250 seconds, twenty seconds short of a standard 270-second night. Two in series give 250/2 + 250 = 375 seconds. Three feeding two appliances give 250/4 + 250/3 + 250/2 = 270.83 seconds: a fragile 0.83-second margin. Choosing a 10% buffer raises the target to 297 seconds and the required chain to four.
Assumptions and limits
- All batteries are identical and full. Every appliance is downstream of the last battery; intermediate branches, mixed capacities, partial charge, lasers and altered discharge rules are excluded.
- This is a continuous-time estimate from community-maintained documentation, not an in-game guarantee. Player-reported results can differ near the boundary; a positive fraction of a second is not reliable coverage.
- The planner checks at most 1,000 batteries. Long chains become progressively less efficient. Independent circuits or better batteries may be more practical; this tool does not optimize an entire base network.

Frequently asked questions
What wiring does the Abiotic Factor Battery Calculator support?
One straight chain: outlet → battery → battery → final appliances, optionally through Plug Strips or Plug Boards at the end. It supports Makeshift, Industrial, Carbon and Quantum batteries, but every battery in a calculation must be the same type and fully charged.
Why can the Abiotic Factor Battery Calculator recommend an extra battery?
The minimum includes your chosen extra planning time. Three Makeshift batteries feeding two devices barely clear the default night in the mathematical model. The default 10% buffer asks for four instead. Set the buffer to zero to inspect the theoretical minimum, not to guarantee in-game coverage.
Can the Abiotic Factor Battery Calculator handle custom nights?
Yes: enter the actual outage duration in real minutes. This avoids assuming that a world-setting multiplier maps directly to battery drain. The tool continues to use the documented standard drain rate; worlds or mods that change that rate are outside its scope.
