Formula
Piece method: linear feet = piece count × length per piece. Area method: linear feet = area in ft² ÷ installed width in feet. Order length = base length × (1 + extra-material rate).
Worked example
Covering 240 ft² with boards having a 6 in effective width requires 240 ÷ 0.5 = 480 linear ft before waste.
