How to use this calculator

Enter each bed area and planned depth.

Check the bag volume printed on the product.

Set the allowance and use the rounded-up whole-bag result.

Formula

Order volume = total area × depth × (1 + allowance). Bags = ceil(order volume ÷ bag volume).

Worked example

A 120 ft² bed at 3 in deep needs 30 ft³. With 10% extra that is 33 ft³, so 2 ft³ bags require ceil(33 ÷ 2) = 17 bags.

Assumptions and limits

  • Default bag volume is 2 ft³ and is editable.
  • Default extra material is 10%.
  • The tool does not estimate mulch weight.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the bag count always rounded up?

A fraction of a sealed bag cannot normally be purchased, so rounding up avoids understating the order.

Can I use metric and US customary units in the Mulch Calculator?

Yes. Unit changes convert the same canonical measurement; they do not reinterpret or round your original value.

When does the calculator round?

The calculation keeps full precision internally and rounds only the displayed result. Whole packages are rounded up at the final step.
