Formula

X percent of Y = X ÷ 100 × Y; X as a percent of Y = X ÷ Y × 100; percentage change = (final − initial) ÷ |initial| × 100, with the signed change reported separately.

Worked example

Twenty percent of 80 is 16; 20 is 25% of 80; and moving from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase with a signed change of 20.

Derivation

  1. For “X% of Y,” convert X to a decimal and multiply: result = X ÷ 100 × Y.
  2. For “X is what percent of Y,” divide by the nonzero base: p = X ÷ Y × 100%.
  3. Percentage change is (y − x) ÷ |x| × 100% when x is the nonzero starting value and y is the ending value.

Rounding and precision

The engine performs no deliberate intermediate rounding and shows up to 6 decimal places. A comparison base of 0 is rejected. For a negative starting value x, this calculator deliberately divides change by |x| and displays a convention warning.
