Formula

Board courses = ceil((deck width in inches + gap) ÷ (actual board width + gap)), because N courses contain N board widths but only N − 1 gaps; stock boards per course = ceil(deck length ÷ stock length); purchased boards = ceil(courses × boards per course × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)).

Worked example

A 16 ft × 12 ft surface using 5.5 in boards, 0.25 in gaps, 16 ft stock, and 10% waste needs 26 courses and an estimated 29 boards.

Derivation

  1. For N rows of decking boards, total covered width is N × decking board width + (N − 1) × gap width because gaps occur only between adjacent boards.
  2. With all widths in inches, solving that coverage inequality gives N = ceil((entered project width × 12 + gap width) ÷ (actual decking board width + gap width)).
  3. Number of selected-length decking boards per row = ceil(entered project length ÷ selected standard board length), and the board count before waste is the product of those 2 whole-number counts.
  4. Purchased count = ceil(base count × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)).

Rounding and precision

Linear dimensions remain unrounded until the number of individual decking boards is rounded upward. The entered waste percentage is applied after the board count before waste, and the final number of decking boards to buy is also rounded upward.
